Twenty one volunteers came out to do work for the National Trust in Blackstable Wood where we spent the afternoon cutting back vegetation and overhanging branches along the bridleway. This ensures that horses and their riders can get along easily and without danger. The morning was spent in the adjoining wood where small trees were felled and vegetation cut back to allow more light to penetrate and thus encourage butterflies and ground level flowers. Volunteers were able to watch the site warden demonstrating safe felling techniques using bow saws, before having a go themselves. We will be returning to this site later in the year to continue the work.
