The task for the day was to improve a steep section of the Cotswold Way where it had become eroded by surface water running from the road above. In preparation for our work, the Highway Authority had installed granite sets in an attempt to divert water away from the trail. Ten people, including two new volunteers turned out on a bright cold morning to receive instructions from the Cotswold Way works manager.

The group divided into two teams, one replacing 4 narrow steps at the foot of the path. These were wider and safer than the originals. The other team started at the top restoring and widening the route. The biggest challenge was working around the many tree roots. Additional drainage channels were dug to allow any escaping surface water to drain into the woods below. Two steps were also inserted at the top where the trail leaves the road and where it was particularly steep.

Everyone worked with enthusiasm and all were surprised at how much had been achieved by the end of the day. It was very satisfying for GVCV members to contribute to the upgrading of this route which will shortly receive National Trail status.
