Four quality volunteers turned up to do some footpath access work on a surprisingly chilly but sunny Sunday morning in September. The site is located along a footpath in a rural setting down by the River Severn on the outskirts of Gloucester. We were met by Justin the Severnside Project Officer, who gave a brief introduction to the site, task for the day, and his future plans for the area.
The work was finishing off a footbridge and gate started by the BTCV's midweek group. This consisted of adding a number of rails to the footbridge and hanging a gate at one end. Gate hanging certainly proved a challenge for Jeff and Justin and occupied them fully for the morning!
After a well earned lunch three of us ventured across the fields to fell some conifers and left the other two grappling with the gate. After negotiating a fearsome nettle patch we managed to fell a couple of large conifers in an attempt to open up the plantation area. After logging these up and tidily stacking the cut branches (brash) we joined Jeff and Justin to admire their splendid handy work, which actually shut, and have a cuppa.
We left the site at around 4pm with a warm glow of satisfaction and the hope that local ramblers will appreciate all our fine efforts!
