Once again we were blessed with excellent seasonal weather for what has become a popular annual event in the GVCV work/social calendar. Sixteen volunteers turned out for some festive coppicing in an area of coppice first cut by the group several years ago. As always Julian, Gloucestershire County Council Sites Warden, hosted the task ably assisted by Simon. Julian gave a brief explanation of the work to be done, and a tools talk was given, before we were let loose on the trees.

One of the advantages of working on the same site over a number of years is that you get to see the positive benefits to wildlife that have resulted from your collective labours. It is particularly satisfying to reintroduce a coppice cycle and then start the process again on another cycle. The consequent variety in densities within the coppice block provides a valuable habitat for fauna and flora alike.

A lot of the cut coppice material was saved for use as hedging stakes, bindings and Morris Dancing sticks! A sizeable bonfire was soon established to dispose of the remainder of the brash.

Lunchtime, considered by some to be the highlight of the day, saw the consumption of a considerable quantity of baked potatoes with various toppings and mince pies, washed down with tea and coffee. Thanks to Claire for organising the catering. Another important function of this task over the years has been to enable people to catch up on gossip. And this year was no exception!

By the end of the day we had managed to cut an impressive area of coppice whilst renewing old friendships. After the traditional vote of thanks we made our way home weary but filled with a 'post environmental project, job well done' satisfied glow.
